On July 3, 1988, the USS Vincennes of the United States Navy shot down Iran’s civilian Flight 655 on its usual route over Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The cold-blooded terrorist attack killed all 290 people on board, including 66 children and 16 women. The US Navy even awarded special commendation medals for “meritorious service” to two of the top officers who were serving on the USS Vincennes.
